More than150 years later, this story comes alive at Connecticut's Mystic Seaport. There, a replica of the freedom schooner Amistad has been refashioned into a floating classroom. Its purpose is to keep the true story of the original Amistad incident alive. Its message... that unity, piece and true cooperation demand justice and equality... is just as relevant now as in 1839.

Beginning in 1839, a series of events propelled a group of West African captives onto center stage in the struggle for freedom and human dignity cargo ship that bore 53 captives who rebelled in pursuit of their freedom, prompted people of faith and ethics to join in a struggle for liberation that crossed lines of race, culture and economic status.
